A new borehole was drilled at St. Matthias Mbuye Vocational Secondary School in the Rakai district of southern Uganda, near the border with Tanzania. The local rural area has typical villages with farmers and pastoralists who support the school. There are 618 students studying at O Level at the school. This school is rather unique among secondary schools in Uganda because it uses a curriculum that trains entering students in vocational skills from the first year, so that when they enter fourth year, they sit for national exams in the skills that they chose as well as regular academic curriculum. Students graduating then have a certificate from the Uganda Business and Technical Board as well as the Uganda Certificate of Education. Head Teacher Kaboogere Vicent reports that the intent is to “send to the world people who are self-reliant job makers, rather than job seekers.” Now, thanks to a generous donation by the McFadden family of Omaha NE, students boarding at St. Matthias Mbuye have clean drinking water right on campus.
Many thanks to the McFadden Family of Omaha for donating funds for this borehole!!
