At the end of last year, a new borehole was drilled on the campus of Rwantsinga High School in the Mbarara district in southwestern Uganda. There are 658 students boarding at this school and studying at both O and A Levels. Unlike some schools, Rwantsinga High School owns the land for the campus buildings. Head Teacher Kaganda Francis directs a staff of 52, and the academic performance is very strong, nationally. Local villagers are farmers, but they struggle in this region because it is dry. Water is collected with dams and water harvesting tanks. In some cases, the school had to pay to have water brought in by truck, but the water collection point was contaminated. Now the students at this fine school are no longer sick from drinking contaminated water and can fill their buckets and jerrycans with clean water pumped from their new borehole on campus (see picture). One thing we need to remember is that even though the new borehole gives them a source of clean water, there is always a long queue when it is time for the students to pump the water (see the picture below). Even in good times, the students in Uganda have to struggle. This borehole was donated by the McFadden family of Omaha NE.
